NYPL125 Paintings

Jefferson Market Library

To celebrate NYPL 125, The Hudson Park Library asked me to paint the branch libraries of Lower Manhattan. We have to wait to exhibit these watercolors in person at the Hudson Park Library but we decided to start with an online exhibition!

Archival prints of the paintings are available online and I’m donating a portion from each sale to the library.

I’m thrilled to share this first batch of watercolor paintings on pen & ink drawings I made to celebrate #nypl125 (Yes, the 125th Anniversary of the New York Public Library! after being asked by the @hudsonparknypl.) Stay tuned for an in person exhibition at the Hudson Park Library. Swipe through to see them and see the rest tomorrow! 1. Hudson Park Library @hudsonparknypl 2. Tompkins Square Library @tompkins_square_library 3. Hamilton Fish Park Library @nypl_hamilton_fish_park 4. Chatham Square Library @chsqteens_nypl 5. Battery Park City 6. Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library @nyplheiskell 7. Epiphany Library @epiphanynypl Also, I made most of these drawings while quarantined in Ohio and then painted while “staying home” mostly from photos I took in early March. Archival prints of the paintings are available online and I’m donating part of each sale to that branch. To celebrate #nypl125, @hudsonparknypl asked me to paint the branch libraries of Lower Manhattan. We have to wait to exhibit these watercolors in person at the Hudson Park Library but we decided to start with an online exhibition! Yesterday we both posted the first seven libraries of our New York Public Library Branches of Lower Manhattan exhibition to our Instagram pages, here are the remaining six! Swipe through to see them: 8. Jefferson Market Library @jefferson_market_library 9. Ottendorfer Library @ottendorfer_library 10. Kips Bay Library 11. Seward Park Library @sewardparknypl 12. Mulberry Street Library 13. New Amsterdam Library @newamsterdamlibrary How did I make these paintings? In March 2020, I biked around Manhattan taking as many reference photos as I could. All of the paintings are on hot press Arches watercolor paper torn to about 8”x8” and made within a 6”x6” square. First I made a pencil sketch using an HB pencil (easy to erase), then I made the drawing with pen & ink, and finished with painting with watercolors. Please ask me any questions in the comments. Archival prints of the paintings are available online and I’m donating $5 from each sale to the library branch featured in the image.
